The program includes two great symphonies by two of the greatest composers of the 19th century: Ludwig van Beethoven's 8th Symphony and Johannes Brahms' 3rd Symphony.
The Thurgau Youth Orchestra is celebrating its 60th anniversary! To mark the occasion, two great symphonies by two of the greatest composers of the 19th century are on the program: Ludwig van Beethoven's 8th Symphony and Johannes Brahms' 3rd Symphony. The concerts will take place on Sunday, September 7, 2025 at 5.00 pm in the Protestant Church Romanshorn, on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at 7.30 pm in the Protestant Church Steckborn and on Sunday, September 14, 2025 at 5.00 pm in the Dreispitz Kreuzlingen. The Thurgau Youth Orchestra has now been in existence for 60 years. It was founded in 1965 by Thurgau violinist Martin Sigrist and was originally a pure string orchestra. After Gabriel Estarellas Pascual took over the string orchestra in 2008, he expanded the orchestra into a full symphony orchestra in 2015. To celebrate the orchestra's 60th anniversary and its 10th anniversary as a symphony orchestra, the concert program includes two magnificent Romantic symphonies. Ludwig van Beethoven composed his 8th Symphony in 1811 and 1812, shortly after completing his 7th Symphony. The 8th Symphony is bursting with cheerfulness and joie de vivre, which can be easily recognized by the omission of the typically slow second movement, which was replaced by an Allegretto scherzando. In contrast to this is Johannes Brahms' 3rd Symphony, which was also composed in the key of F major. It was composed in 1883 and, like Beethoven's, is his second-last symphony. The 3rd Symphony was composed during the time of the music controversy between the supporters of absolute music, such as Brahms, and the supporters of program music. In comparison to Beethoven's, Brahms' symphony repeatedly fluctuates between major and minor and, quite atypically, does not end with a tutti forte in the fourth movement, but ends in pianissimo. The Thurgau Youth Orchestra has already won prizes at prestigious competitions and toured throughout Europe. Under the professional artistic direction of Gabriel Estarellas Pascual, it prepares two to three different classical concert programs each year. The Thurgau Youth Orchestra impresses with its joy of playing, differentiation and high musical quality and is an important platform for the promotion of young people and young talent.
