Bommer pond

The Bommer Weiher ponds are "among the most beautiful of what still exists of this kind in Thurgau ". The Thurgau government once stated this. Anyone who takes the time to visit the ponds will be able to experience the charm and ambience of this unique landscape.
The Bommer Weiher ponds are located in a gentle depression north of the hamlet of Bommen near Alterswilen. They were probably created artificially around 1460 primarily for the purpose of using water power for mills. They are also likely to have played an important role as fishing grounds. Threatened by excessive siltation, they had to be restored in 1979.
Today, the Bommer Weiher are a popular recreational area at any time of year. The entire pond area is now a nature reserve and an important habitat for water birds and amphibians.
