Helfenberg ruins
The Helfenberg ruins offer insights into the medieval history of Thurgau. The first written references date back to a St. Gallen document from the early 14th century; from 1413 onward, reports refer only to a castle ruin, indicating that it was no longer fully habitable. The site is located in the Seebach Valley and is part of regional historical walking tours that lead from the prehistoric settlements at Nussbaumersee to the Roman villa at Stutheien. Archaeological investigations conducted by the Thurgau Office of Archaeology Thurgau the 1980s unearthed ceramic fragments and a bronze oval buckle; some finds date to around 1200 and suggest that the castle was built more than 100 years before its first written mention. The ruins were renovated in 1981–82 and 2010–11.
