Saurer Museum

The Saurer Museum traces the history of the once world-famous company. On display are commercial vehicles from every generation, starting with the “Caminhao” from 1911, which was brought back from Brazil in 2003 and restored. The legendary “Car alpin,” the quintessential post bus; a unique bus from the Zurich Tramway; military vehicles of all types; and a large engine exhibition bear witness to the pioneering spirit of that era. The textile machinery section also features weaving and embroidery machines. The oldest, a “Chlüpperli machine,” was built as early as 1860. The S1 automatic embroidery machine is controlled by a “mechanical computer” built in 1912 and produces beautiful St. Gallen embroidery. All textile machines are in working order and can be demonstrated in operation by experts upon advance request. The Saurer Museum is run exclusively by volunteers. The vintage machines are cared for, repaired, and maintained in the museum’s own workshop. For this outstanding volunteer work, the Saurer Museum received the EMYA Silletto Prize in 2014, a top European award.
