Former monastery of St. Katharinental

Former monastery of St. Katharinental
St. Katharinental Abbey is a former monastery complex on the banks of the Rhine near Diessenhofen. The monastery church, an outstanding creation of southern German baroque, is worthy of special mention. The historic monastery buildings are now home to a rehabilitation clinic.
The history of the former Dominican convent dates back to the beginning of the 13th century. It experienced various periods of prosperity over the centuries and also survived the turmoil of the Reformation after 1529 unscathed. The convent was finally dissolved in 1869 and the remaining nuns were relocated. The convent church, built between 1732 and 1734 by Johann Michael Beer, houses an important organ from the time of its construction. The main portal of the church is open daily, and access to the interior of the church is possible twice a week in the summer months and twice a month in the winter months. There is also a small house museum, where the building history of the monastery and its cultural and historical significance as a spiritual center on the Upper Rhine - both during the mystical period and at the time of the monastic reforms of the 18th century - are presented with exhibits. The museum is not open to the public. Guided tours of the church, hermit chapel and the small house museum are available for groups.
