Altnau apple trail

Thanks to information stations and hands-on installations, the Altnau Apple Trail turns hiking into an educational adventure tour for young and old apple trail explorers. Guides in the form of the apple mascots "Emma", "Lisi" and "Fredi" lead the family on three routes through the apple groves.

Apple village on Lake Constance
The Thurgau village of Altnau lies in the middle of gently rolling apple orchards and has been cultivating, growing and processing Jonagold, Gala and Braeburn apples for generations. Visitors can find out why apples grow particularly well here at the information boards on the Altnau Apple Trail. The revised adventure trail extends the previous fruit trail and can be explored on foot, by bike or in a horse-drawn carriage. Play tips and hands-on activities along the routes are aimed specifically at families with children. The tour is particularly beautiful during apple blossom in spring or harvest time in fall.
Start of the apple trail
The starting point of the apple trail is at the foot of Altnau, 500 meters from the train station. The Thurbo regional train from Schaffhausen, Kreuzlingen, Romanshorn and St. Gallen arrives here every half hour. From Kreuzlingen, the Postbus line 923 takes guests to Altnau in half an hour. Scheduled boats depart from Romanshorn, Kreuzlingen, Immenstaad and Hagnau and dock at the longest jetty on Lake Constance. From here, signposts lead to the starting point of the apple trail. Those arriving by car will find paid parking spaces at the train station and at the harbor.

"Especially during the fruit tree blossom in April and May, the apple trail in Altnau is a wonderful experience."

Always relaxed after the apple
The Altnau Apple Trail consists of three routes that can be combined to form circular trails of five, six or seven kilometers. Each trail is inspired by an apple mascot: east of Altnau, the apple trail winds its way through the apple groves under the bright red apple "Lisi". The 14 stations tell exciting stories about fruit growing and the work of fruit growers all year round. The yellow route with the mascot "Fredi" leads through the middle of the village and introduces various apple and pear varieties. With riddles, recipes and anecdotes, every walk flies by. On the green "Emma" route west of Altnau, apple fans can meet wild and honey bees and learn a lot about the Thurgau fruit region as well as the history and cultivation of the crunchy fruit. On the red and green routes, Lisi and Emma invite children to balance on tree trunks, search for pairs of fruit and explore the earth. Fredi delights children on the yellow route with variety information, puzzles and jokes. The themed trail is varied and offers the best conditions for an excursion with the whole family.
A trip to take a bite
Farm stores, restaurants and taverns in and around Altnau offer sweet cider, apple rings and other delicious fruit creations. If you run out of breath along the way, you can rest on one of the many benches, rest and picnic areas along the route - usually in front of a magnificent panorama of Lake Constance. One tip is the Feierlenhof in Altnau, where the Barth family has been welcoming guests to their farm for several generations. A petting zoo delights children and animal lovers alike.

Apple path Lisi

The red route is four kilometers long and takes about two hours on foot or one hour by bike. It runs east of Altnau and focuses on the work of fruit growers.

Apple path Emma

The green, three-kilometre route takes around one and a half hours on foot and 40 minutes by bike. To the west of the village, it reveals interesting facts about fruit growing, the apple village of Altnau and Thurgau.

Apple path Fredi

The yellow route leads through the middle of the village. Pedestrians need about an hour to cover the two kilometers. The route is not suitable for cyclists.
